Zoe Kazan is no stranger to Hollywood: her parents, boyfriend and late grandfather Elia all found fame in the industry. Zoe Kazan has been in a lot of movies but, as she tells me on the short walk from a photo studio in Manhattan to an Indian restaurant for lunch, she has been troubled by the paparazzi only once. The actor is in pale dungaree shorts and an embroidered denim jacket, and at 33 is slight and earnest; she could, if she wanted to, still just about carry off bunches. Suddenly, British paps materialised outside their Brooklyn apartment. That relative obscurity may be about to expire. Off-screen, Kazan could be said to be in a similar phase.

Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano are the stars of Ruby Sparks, a clever love story about, among other things, identity and the balance of power in relationships. Dano plays Calvin, a novelist who imagines and then writes about the girl of his dreams. One day, that girl shows up at his house. He has willed her into existence. Kazan plays the girl, Ruby.

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, “The Big Sick” tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail Nanjiani , who connects with grad student Emily Kazan after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry Holly Hunter and Ray Romano who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.
A couple deals with their cultural differences as their relationship grows. Kazan and Mr. Nanjiani and The Big Sick, which tells a great story with waves of deep feeling and questions of identity and makes the whole thing feel like a breeze. I laughed plenty at their film, cried my guts out, too, and went home elated. Gordon carved this romantic comedy out of her personal hospital experience and their own culture-clash relationship.
Their hilarious and heartfelt script has a rare authenticity that pulls you in and keeps you glued to the screen. The Big Sick.
Daniel Radcliffe Does Not Find Tinder Addictive At All
A favorite axiom of Hollywood is that the best actors and actresses draw their performances from the rich tapestry of their own real-life experiences, which might explain why so many on-screen couples have ended up hooking up even after the cameras stopped rolling. Really, what else are they supposed to do in that situation? No Brad Pitts or Angelina Jolies here.

I never told my Bengali parents about my first kiss. I was 14 and we were in the basement of my house in Howell, N. Her name was Sharon and she had braces. Sorry, Sharon. They had an arranged marriage. In India, where they grew up, choosing your life partner was uncommon. Right after graduating college, I finally mustered the courage to introduce my mother to my longtime girlfriend, Michelle, hoping that after four decades in the United States, my mother might be ready for the idea that a I had chosen my own girlfriend and b my girlfriend might be white.
This is America, after all: You are exposed to choices. You can say what you want, read what you want and eat what you want. Michelle brought flowers. But my hope was misplaced. The dinner was mostly me being a nervous chatterbox, trying in vain to spark conversation between two people with little in common.
Celebrity Couples So Private You Forgot They Were Together
In fact, there are those who take their on-screen magnetism into real life and sometimes even go on to make another film together. Cast: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano adventures that begin Trainwreck show the arc of history bending toward personal freedom, it’s no surprise when Kazan’s best lines call out the patriarchal pitfalls of dating.
Rom-coms like Trainwreck serve as vehicles for comedians to grow into movie stars. And a bit further afield, there are the improv-laden ensemble indies like Sleeping With Other People and unhappy, high-concept imaginings like The Lobster. This contemporary rom-com diaspora is rich in creativity, banter and cult of personality, yet it feels surprisingly out of conversation with the old guard.
In a word, no. Zoe Kazan wants to keep talking. Judging by her role choices this decade, in not only the just-released The Big Sick , but also What If and Ruby Sparks , Kazan is devoted to rom-coms the way Ben Foster likes not surviving Americana shootout movies or Mark Wahlberg likes to perform suffering in docu-realism about tragedies. Having Kazan on board is a stamp of feminism and enlightenment on a kind of movie historically undergirded by conservatism.
Katherine Hepburn was a beacon of early 20th century feminism, but she still found herself remarrying C. Dexter Haven in The Philadelphia Story. The face of the rom-com changes just as reliably as its ultimate intention never does. No, Kazan characters demand something more of her men, not the other way around. To be with her, the other had better evolve into a more mature, conscientious person, not just a nicer, more polished dude. Emily and Kumail meet in Chicago.
Zoe Kazan Starts Filming ‘Secrets From the Russian Tea Room’
Zoe Kazan plays Emily, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Chicago who goes to a comedy club in the city and sees a standup routine by Kumail. They meet at the bar and soon start dating. There, he resists their ongoing pressure to give up comedy and apply to law school; he only pretends to accede to their demands that he pray and in fact twiddles with his phone in the basement ; and he is introduced to a virtual parade of eligible young Pakistani-American women as Sharmeen attempts to arrange his marriage.
Dano and Kazan, in addition to dating in real life, previously teamed up in “Ruby Sparks”, in which they co-wrote and co-starred. Kazan just.
Nanjiani, who was good in Silicon Valley finds it difficult to emotionally rise to the occasion. He is not; he wants to become a stand-up comedian. When his parents tell him to do his daily quota of prayers, he goes to the basement with mats and switches on the timer on his phone. During those five minutes, he practices cricket shots, watches videos on the phone, does everything else except pray. Born in Pakistan, Kumail — the real one — moved to the U. As is often the case with immigrant families, he and his parents saw a different country and reacted to it and its people, differently.
Kumail, on the other hand, both as an adolescent and as an adult, perhaps saw something different: a new home. And, as he found out, America wanted to chat. The Big Sick is centered on that love story. But that, too, is mired in complications. After dating for a few months, Kumail and Emily Zoe Kazan break-up. The reason?
I could hear the helplessness in her voice as she tried to comfort me. My parents—like the parents of Mindy Kaling, Aziz Ansari, Ravi Patel, and Kumail Nanjiani—had an arranged marriage, meaning an outside party coordinated their engagement specifically, their parents. Not only did my parents get an arranged marriage, most of the couples in my family did, too. The endgame might have been the same marriage, commitment, love , but the how-to was wildly different. Because of these differences, talking to my parents about my romantic life can be confusing, frustrating, and, sometimes, surprisingly illuminating.
Kaling, Ansari, and Nanjiani all have strong comedy careers, and the rom-com genre must be a compelling niche to reach for as comedians play a role in reinventing it.

What a difference a week makes. Will people still want to go to movies when this is over? Will Hollywood ever recover? A few weeks ago—before the spread of COVID closed down entire cities and made in-person interviews impossible— The Plot Against America star Zoe Kazan also sat down with Richard Lawson to talk about her role on the show as Bess Levin, the matriarch of the central Newark, New Jersey family who watch in horror as Lindbergh rises to power.
Listen to the episode above, and find a partial transcript of the interview below. Well, I have the distinct pleasure of being sat across the studio table right now from one of the incredible stars of The Plot Against America , Zoe Kazan. Thanks for being here. I feel like we’ve been ships to the night, crossing paths on Twitter and be it various events at film festivals and stuff, so it’s nice to finally be able to sit down and actually chat.
Oh, right. Every non-bot. But getting to feel like I know other people and other film lovers is, I feel like, a big boon.

Paul Dano: Reading the novel, I felt a deep personal attachment. I saw myself, my parents, my grandparents; I saw family as one of our greatest loves and, therefore, sometimes the source of great pain. I wondered if it could be the foundation of a film for me to direct. Eventually, Zoe and I decided to option the book ourselves, wanting to retain as much control as possible.

Zoe Kazan Leads the This originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year as the opening night film, and is getting a small US release on Valentine’s Day coming up. The ensemble drama is one of those films where various characters around a city eventually all come together. The main character is a young woman named Clara, played by Zoe Kazan , who takes her kids and runs away from an abusive husband who also happens to be a cop.
She finds solace in ‘the kindness of strangers’, staying at a shelter and at a church while she tries to figure out what to do. It’s a nice film that tries very hard to be moving and inspiring, but critics have not been so kind to this one. Add to Chrome. Sign in. Home Local Classifieds. News Break App.
